Heinrich Böll Stiftung İstanbul: 30 Years of Civil Society and Politics in Turkey

These three decades have witnessed pivotal moments in Turkey's history – periods that will undoubtedly captivate future historians.

The 1990s, for instance, were marked by the lingering impact of conflict and systematic human rights abuses. Yet, amidst this darkness, civil society persevered, fuelled by resistance and hope in the aftermath of the 1980 coup. The 2000s brought different challenges, with environmental degradation and unchecked urban development casting a shadow over the promise of EU accession, democratic progress, and economic growth.

Amidst these complexities, civil moments have blossomed, rekindling hope.

These 30 years encapsulate the Heinrich Böll Stiftung Turkey Office's journey and the broader narrative of Turkish civil society. In a wider context, they mirror the transformations of the world over the past three decades. This exhibition is a tribute to ourselves, our partners, and those who shared this journey with us. It's a moment to remember those we've lost, those unjustly taken from us, and those scattered.

As we reflect on the past, we also look towards the future. The world, and Turkey within it, faces an era of unprecedented challenges. We, too, must navigate these complexities. This retrospective grounds us in our shared history, providing the strength and confidence to face the future with a firm memory.
